YesStyle PeopleStyle 2007 7月号

2007年，在YesStyle.com网站创立一周年的人物专访中，我们邀请了陈法拉作为【PeopleStyle】七月之星。在某个炎热的下午，陈法拉坐在【PeopleStyle】的摄影棚中，准备为拍摄七月号的夏日时装潮流预告。选择法拉为七月之星，并非是因为她是泳衣秀的新宠儿，或是她在各大报章杂志超高的曝光率，而是我们喜欢她的青春样子与高佻身形，由她来演绎夏天新装理想不过。

一切从选美开始

翻查传媒档案，法拉从20岁开始便开始了选美的生涯，由2002年阿特兰大全美亚裔小姐、2003年美国华埠小姐至2004年纽约华裔小姐，直至2005年来港参选国际华裔小姐。在过去五年间，如此乐此不疲地参加选美，法拉可算是选美界的佼佼者！今年才25岁的法拉，道出最初参选的因由。「其实，是当年乔治亚州的同学们看到选美网站，在怂恿下一起参与，因为参赛者可以免费跟随大队一起到叁藩市参选！」如今想起来，法拉也不禁失笑。不过，选美的经验却令她毕生难忘，「在穿州过省的选美期间，认识了不少好朋友，并与商界名人碰面，真是大开眼界。」她续道。

女儿当自强

在国内出世，父亲教钢琴、母亲教中国及民族舞，身为家中独女的法拉，自小便跟随艺术世家的父母四处游历，直至15岁那年才定居于美国。天资聪敏的她，在美国阿特兰大上大学 (Emory University) 修读工商管理课程时，已操得一口流利的英语，而且进修日文。因此，当她在日本当交流生的期间，陈法拉更被看中，担任日本【JJ】杂志的模特儿，成为她首份模特儿的工作。「之前在美国集中留意巴黎或米兰等欧洲的时装，当在日本工作时，让我布机会接触亚洲时装。近年来，东洋或中国风也不时在欧洲时装秀大行其道，足见全球时装界趋向一体化。」

近日在香港时装秀的天桥看到法拉的踪影，高佻标准的身形，加上青春的美人胚子，令她成为不少品牌的新宠儿。法拉坦言，在美国时生活习惯及身著方面，一切从简，多穿T恤和牛仔裤。不过，参加选美时必须以高贵的形象示人，而踏入娱乐圈之後，拍摄电视剧时多以不同的形象出镜，或以百变的造型参与不同场合的 Catwalk Show。其实，法拉就如平凡的女生一样，一样爱谈天，也爱美。
身兼艺人兼模特儿的法拉，工作上经常要穿上花姿衣裳示人，表示今次为YesStyle.com当模特儿，心情有点兴奋，「我从未为时装购物网站当模特儿，今次要縯绎多套亚洲各地夏日潮流服饰，在互联网发布。现今互联网的资讯可发放至世界各地，真想快些知道【PeopleStyle】七月号的效果如何！」

下一站……天后?

「法拉」这个名字很特别，她表示是爷爷的意思，原来她的爷爷是一位音乐家，他替孙女取名为「法拉」，即是中乐音符的音调，让人听了「陈法拉」这个名字，便一听难忘。在演艺世家出身的法拉，自小受家庭的薰陶，对演艺事业尤其令她心醉。然而，由选美的舞台，转战到电视「公仔箱」，得来全不容易。

自2005年以来，法拉主演的TVB电视剧由《法证先锋》到《溏心风暴》，一部接一部，角色不断变化之馀，令她的演技备受注目。在即将播出的大型舞蹈电视剧《舞动全城》之中，将考验法拉的舞技。作为演员新人，法拉很渴望作多方面角色的尝试，「好像在《溏心风暴》中，我扮演的是唐家18岁的女儿至欣，其实我并不太了解在香港土生土长的少女，所以我唯有向fans取经，并多观察她们的一举一动，希望令演出更加全神。」

四十集长剧《溏心风暴》在播出时，掀起全城热话，身为剧中的一份子，法拉感到十分荣幸，并且很珍惜这次与众好戏之人同台演出的机会，令她获益良多。除了演技方面要多下苦功外，法拉正在努力学好广东话，「我经常找在大学里的朋友来矫正广东话的发音，并在拍剧前努力背稿，希望演好角色之馀，又得到观众的肯定。」在访问当日，法拉用广东话答对如流，可见她两年来所下的苦功终于获得回报。

谈及新剧《舞动全城》，有舞蹈底子的法拉便雀跃不已，「这是我第一次学习拉丁舞，一跳便爱上了！」今次有用「舞」之地的法拉，更不讳言希望有一天踏上百老汇的台阶，让演技、舞技尽情展现，如果有一天能够与云妮思颖嘉(Renee Zellwegger)同台载歌载舞，简直是她梦寐以求的的机会！在演技上，则视同是选美出身的张曼玉为偶像，法拉更希望如Maggie一样在演技上创出一遍新天地。

性感宣言

在香港各大报章传媒上看到法拉的报导，不是有关她的绯闻恋情，就是她的性感泳衣照，不少人赞赏法拉的泳衣照既性感又健康，令她顿时成为新一代的性感女神。成为传媒追访焦点的法拉坦言，有些相片选美时的造型照，有些则是为其他品牌行Catwalk，她抱著专业工作精神来面对镜头，当看到周刊封面时唯有以平常心来面对。至于被封为性感女神，她愧不敢当。

「性感并非只是靠衣著的，而是骨子里的气质。」法拉自问不是娇俏女生，又不懂卖弄风情。她认为万人迷的夫妻档毕彼特(Brad Pitt)及安琪莲娜祖儿(Angelina Jolie)才是真正的性感偶像。然而，在刚播完的 TVB 剧集《师奶兵团》中，她饰演的性感迷人的Angela，的确令男生难以抗拒。她又感觉如何呢？「这是首次接触这类型的角色，扮演性感角色也是演技训练的一部分。」

在忙得不可开交的日子中，家人的支持是法拉的原动力。「他们(父母)经常在网上看到有关我的报导，便担心我的安全。所以他们经常会致电给我，安慰我之馀又不忘一句『不过你上头条的封面照也拍得不错吧！』」法拉笑说。

在【PeopleStyle】摄影棚中，看到法拉马不停蹄地为拍摄作准备的时候，她也不忘给在场的工作人员更多的意见，希望拍摄的效果做到尽善尽美。法拉专业的精神，教人不其然会情不自禁地爱上她。再听她说话就知道，她拥有一片正面、率性自然的性格。2006年至今的一年期间，法拉在演艺圈内不断工作、不断成长，加上天赋的本钱，与生俱来的演艺细胞，造就个性独特的一颗超新星。

Fala Chen's Perfect Poise

The whole Yesstyle.com is a hotbed of activity for its 1st anniversary. With Asian fashion on the upswing, Yesstyle.com truly deserves a celebration. And could be better than having Fala Chen, Hong Kong's hottest 'it' girl, as our cover model for the PeopleStyle anniversary issue? As Yesstyle.com turns a year old, Fala tells us why the first victories are always sweeter.

As she strides into the YesStyle.com office, her svelte figure and confidence betray her pageant roots but Fala Chen doesn't mouth "world peace" constantly. Quick to smile and disarmingly affable, it's easy to see why she's already considered a beauty pageant veteran even if she's just in her early twenties. Her titles alone are a mouthful: Miss Asian America 2002, 1st runner-up in the Miss Chinatown USA 2003 (Miss Chinese Chamber of Commerce), Miss NY Chinese 2004, and Miss Chinese International 2005 runner-up.

Her pageant career was jumpstarted by a dare from her friends back at university. According to Fala, her college friends stumbled onto the Miss Asian America website and egged her to join. "The website said that successful applicants would get to go to San Francisco for free and that was definitely attractive!" she says with a grin. Needless to say, she found herself flying from Georgia to San Francisco as one of the contenders. The rest is history.

Woman of the World

Having traveled at a very young age with her parents, Fala views the world with an open mind. Moving to the US with her family at age 15 might have been a traumatic experience for other teenagers but not her. "My father lived in Kansas because of his work there and I'd always visit him whenever I could," she explains.
By the time she reached university, she was fluent in English and had developed an interest in Japanese, so much that she joined an exchange program and lived in Japan for a summer. She recalls her stay there with fondness: "Learning to speak Japanese was one thing; speaking it all the time and living the Japanese life was another!" She describes the exchange program as "intensive", and credits her stay there for imbuing her with a love of Japanese food and even picking up a few culinary skills along the way.

Aside from improving her Japanese, Fala got her first taste of the fashion world by doing modeling work for a popular Japanese magazine. "Before, I really had no idea about Asian fashion," she says. "That modeling gig opened doors for me." Nowadays, she finds herself being more dressy and particular about the clothes she wears, especially for public appearances. "It used to be that fashion was just exclusively European - Paris or Milan," she explains. "But now, it's really on a global scale. Western designers are inspired by Japanese and Asian styles and vice versa."

Her modeling experience has taught her what looks good on her and has imbued her with a healthy self-image. While still a tee-and-jeans girl at heart, Fala is just as comfortable in a beautiful designer gown, a pretty summer frock, or a swimsuit. Just like any woman, she loves to dress up.

Today, there is a big demand for her in Hong Kong as a spokesperson or print-ad model. Fala admits that her shoot for YesStyle.com is a first for her. "I've never done any work as a model for online fashion before," she candidly says. "I can't wait to see how this will turn out since the Internet has a bigger reach."

Earning Her Stars

Apart from being a sought-after face for commercials and promotions, Fala has made a smooth transition from beauty queen to rising TV star. Her filmography now includes a growing number of TVB dramas starting from "Forensic Heroes", "Heart of Greed" and the upcoming "The Entire City Dances".

Another hurdle was learning Cantonese. While she has been speaking it since moving here 2 years ago, she admits she still has a long way to go with the language. To help with her fluency, a friend at university helps her go over scripts and works with her on intonation and expressions. Still, her increasing list of acting assignments is proof that people in the industry are taking note of her talent.

Her dancing skills are put to the test in the upcoming drama "The Entire City Dances" where she gets to sway to sultry Latin dances. It also meant setting aside some of her inhibitions and expressing herself more. Her role in this series has also given her a taste for live performance. Would she ever do a Broadway-type role? "Why not? That would be a real thrill - singing, acting and dancing at the same time," she says with a smile. For now, Fala is looking forward to someday working with her idol Maggie Cheung, herself a former beauty queen. She also harbors dreams of making it to Hollywood and starring in a movie with Renee Zellweger. Meanwhile, her mindset is focused on making it in Hong Kong and honing her craft.

Behind the Scenes

The local media's fascination with all aspects of her life may faze any newcomer in the business but Fala takes it in stride. "I feel that the media these days writes those thing to satisfy the audience but that's not really me," she points out. "Right now, I just want to show them a credible performance in terms of the characters that I play; in time, people will get to know the real me." Even though people want to know every tidbit of her life, Fala treasures her privacy and wants to be in control of what she discloses.

Her experiences in the pageant arena have given Fala a healthy view of her body. While most stars may be averse to wearing something daring, she views it differently. "It's simply a question of whether it's professional or unprofessional. If I were asked to appear at a swimsuit show, then it's only practical that I wear one. Sometimes, the media has a tendency to take it out of context," she points out.

The word "sexy" has a different effect on Fala. "I think I'm far from sexy!" she laughs. "Sexy is not just about baring your skin; it's all about presenting yourself in a certain way, like coquettish or flirty and I'm certainly not that," she says seriously. Fala as a femme fatale? In her role in the drama "The Army of Housewives", she had to portray the role of a woman that men found irresistible. It posed a challenge to the actress to step into such a character. "In a way, being sexy is also an acting skill I'm learning to take on," explains.

The media focus on Fala has not escaped her parents' attention but she credits them for keeping an open mind and trusting her implicitly. "They always keep track of the news online and, of course, they're always worried about my safety," she shares. "They call to ask how I am, and if there was a not-so-favorable piece about me, they're always quick to offer comfort and joke about it: 'That's okay; your picture was nice anyway!'" she laughs.

At the end of a busy, working day, Fala is just that: a hardworking young woman pursuing her dreams and ambitions. Having made the leap from pageants to performing, she's ready to explore other avenues for her craft and strengthen her foothold in the business. Gossip and rumors notwithstanding, she intends to make her mark in the fickle world of the Hong Kong entertainment industry. And there are still plenty of "firsts" to be achieved along the way.
